Employee Free Choice: Make It the Law!

June 19, 2008

IUE-CWA is spearheading the challenge to have locals pledge to gather cards from 15 percent of members - including, hopefully, many with photos - to demonstrate to Congress that union members are behind the Employee Free Choice Act.

IUE-CWA President Jim Clark has been visiting with locals in key battleground states to educate them on the urgent need to change the law to allow workers to have a free choice to join a union.

Already locals covering more than 66 percent of the membership have signed the pledge. Clark is asking for full participation in the effort.

"IUE-CWA has been hit hard by the obstacles to organizing that the Employee Free Choice Act would fix," said Clark. "We need to do our part."

Some 60 million workers have said they would join a union if they could do so without experiencing intimidation, indoctrination or misinformation.

Instead the reality is that instead of being able to make their own choice about union representation, each year more than 20,000 workers are illegally fired or discriminated against for exercising attempting to organize.

“We have to fight to stop workers from being stripped of the basic freedom to join a union,” said Clark. “If we don’t win this fight, our own contracts, our own wages and benefits, will continue to deteriorate.  Our jobs are at stake in this fight.”
