IUE-CWA Staff Rep Dies
Warren, Ohio
IUE-CWA Staff Representative Harold "Nick" Nichols died July 27 at the age of 64 after a brief battle with lung cancer.
Nichols joined the IUE in 1966 in the Warren, Ohio, Packard Electric plant. He rose to become shop chairman of the local, one of the union's largest, before being elected chairman of the Automotive Conference Board in 1997.
After that he switched to organizing. At the time of his death he was servicing locals in Northeastern Ohio.
Nichols' biggest legacy remains the historic lifetime job and income security agreement he negotiated for Local 717 in 1984.
"Nick was a union man in his soul, always fighting to improve the lives of workers and their families," said IUE-CWA President Jim Clark. "Nick's entire career was dedicated to IUE-CWA and its members. His passion and energy will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."
